Normal (noun) – the usual, average, or typical state or condition (adjective) – conforming to a standard; usual, typical or expected
What is normal? I’ve used the word “normal” in my posts in a mocking manner in the past to emphasize our society’s views on what is an acceptable body image. We have been misguided into believing we must be a certain way in order to be accepted and “normal.”
Even though I am bothered by the idea of a “normal” body image, I can understand the desire to conform to it simply because of the alternative label of “abnormal.” Who wants to be described as deviating from what is normal or usual, typically in a way that is undesirable or worrying?
It is unfortunate that we live in a world that is so quick to pass judgment on its inhabitants. I often wonder why we are so concerned about what someone else is doing. How does my body impact you? Why does my desire to instill and promote body positivity and acceptance bother you so much? Are you worried that people will realize your idea of “normal” isn’t truly acceptable?
When I look at the definition of the word “normal”, I think of the mundane and boring. Who wants to be that? So I decided to look at the synonyms of the word abnormal. Here are a few that I like; untypical, rare, curious, unexpected, unconventional, surprising, exceptional, and extraordinary. I like the sound of that! (in my Goldie Wilson voice – Back to the Future)
Everything about me is exceptional and extraordinary – I believe you are too. So, the naysayers can keep their label of “normal”, I’m happy being me.
Until the next time, be you and most importantly – love you.
Being uniquely you is being uniquely beautiful.
