During one of my brainstorming sessions earlier this week I pondered over the topic for this post, and I came up with “Sex Symbol.” Mainly because of a conversation I had with a colleague a few months ago about how full-figured women are sexualized in the media. I was innocently searching for an article about plus-size model Ashley Graham addressing the subject when I stumbled upon an article that offended me greatly and suddenly, my topic changed.
I am aware of reality, I know there is hate in the world. However, I still find myself in a state of shock when I read or hear that a negative statement has been made about someone. I don’t consider myself to be naïve, but I do wonder if I have too much faith in humanity. I don’t understand why there are people who hate others because of their skin tone, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, gender, and even physical appearance and think it is acceptable. These instances remind me that bullying is not synonymous with children – bullies come in adult sizes too.
So, what can we do? How can we make things better? Is there anything we can do? Can we make things better? I am realizing that my hope in humanity is not a mistake – I’m optimistic.
The fact of the matter is, there are just as many people who stand in support of those who are mistreated and there is something we can do about the mistreatment. We can support individuals who are promoting body positivity and self-love. We can encourage each other to be who we are proudly. Furthermore, for every person who is appalled by the sight of a full-figured woman, there is another person – if not more – who adores every inch.
So, if any person feels the need to express their contempt for fat people, let them – it is their right. And it is our right to express our love and admiration for the same people who are hated. Let’s spread love just as fast as bullies spread hate. Let’s encourage just as fast as bullies spread discouragement.
Yes, bullies and hate reside in this world – but, so does love and encouragement. Let’s make a difference because we can.
Until the next time, be you and most importantly – love you.
Being uniquely you is being uniquely beautiful.
