National Women’s Month: Oprah Winfrey; Adversity Doesn’t Mean Defeat

“…These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 KJV

There are days when I sit and ponder over the things I’ve experienced and I am amazed; a failed marriage and the loss of two babies, just to name a few – but, I am still here. Because of this, I learned adversity does not mean defeat.

As we come to the close of this month I want to highlight another woman who exemplifies strength, determination, and success in spite of adversity. This woman is Ms. Orpah Gail Winfrey.

Ms. Winfrey is known for a lot of things including her talk show the Oprah Winfrey Show. Originally from Mississippi, where she endured molestation and the death of her infant child as a teenager, testifies to the strength that resides within her.

I see this woman as an excellent example of what extraordinary things women are capable of doing. She rose above poverty, abuse, and ridicule and became one of the most influential people in our society. Ms. Winfrey is a symbol of success and I want you and I to emulate her in our own way. Furthermore, I want to encourage you and I to accept and view our problems not as a method to take us out, but opportunities to succeed.

A lot of times problems can cause us to question ourselves. We can begin to wonder if we are bad people because horrible things happen. We can also find ourselves comparing our lives to others. Yes, it is hard – but, adversity births growth. I would not be the woman I am today without the difficult times I’ve faced.

By no means am I hoping for more challenges. But, I am standing and sharing to let another woman know she can make it – simply because I did.

During this last week of National Women’s Month I want to invite you to encourage as many women as you can to follow their dreams and push through adversity. Let’s follow the below quote religiously.

“Turn you wounds into wisdom.” – Oprah Winfrey

Until the next time, be you and most importantly – love you.

Being uniquely you is being uniquely beautiful.

-B.B.
